haiku and poetry by gennepher

***

the child danced
a song without words
wind laughed playfully

***

***

happily all day
child traced patterns with a stick
on dry sandy soil

***

***

a pirate
sailing the seven seas
child on upturned dining table

***

***

the child's parents
did not believe in prayer
but the child prayed anyway

***

***

running barefoot along the sand
the child stopped and turned
she watched her footprints fill with water

***

***

grandma said grace
the child eyed her dinner
getting cold

***

***

tears kept wanting to leak out of her eyes
the child never realized
this was sadness

***

***

the child's doll
her mama box silent
after having a bath...

***

***

"Well I never"
the little girl said
to her broken doll

***

***

in her mind
were all the books
the child could ever read

***

hands pressed against the attic window
the child watched the slow Lancaster bombers
thundering over in the dark night sky

***

***

the little girl
always wanted
a big red plastic train engine

***

***

in amazement
child watched monsters striding across wheat fields
electric pylons

***

***

the child always knew
she belonged to nature
and to the sea

***

***

standing by the stream
out of time
child and her brother

***

***

a summer's day
time stretched
for the child

***

***

the child and her brother
danced like two leaves
until the breeze caught him

***

***

she talked to the tramp
but the child found out
he was a war veteran who’d lost everything

  4. seems you were working on your shed even back then :~)

sometimes it's not until we stop to see the person in front of us do we hear their story..
the picture of his shoes made me cry... the pictures truly capture him

  5. Thank you for your comments.

Yes June I was handy with a saw even as a 2 year old! It looks like I knew what I was doing!

The 'tramp's' name was Big Ernie...I talked to him on my way home from school every day I saw him.

He gave me permission to photograph him...I was honoured he let me do this.

I tried to give him a Christmas present at Christmas, but he smiled at me and said he had no need of anything and gently refused it.

I didn't understand at that time, but I do now.

He was an intelligent, educated man, always reading and we had long interesting conversations. He understood my deafness and that was no bar to us communicating.

There was a 'big' person inside him.

Then the local council in their wisdom put railings in front of all these seated shelters in the Arboretum so tramps could not sleep in them.

I never saw Big Ernie again.

  6. My heart is lifted and saddend at the same time
I too met many men down on their luck in the neighbourhood I grew up in.. some where just out right drunks but they were still people and they had the most amazing stories to tell. So glad that you shared his story . Sad that the people who make rules do so out of fear...if I don't know what has happend to someone I make up a lovely story about them so that I see them walking into their future happy and healthy :~)

It totally looks like you know what's what :~) I love that about looking back at old photos...
I have no pictures of my childhood.. only in my head.. my father lost his camera, still and movie in a poker game before I came along LOL I use to bug him about it...so I had to sit and listen to him tell me stories and I would paint the image in my mind... so in a way.. Thanks Dad :~)
    have a fabulous day

  7. That is a really nice idea to make up a lovely story about them with a happy future...at the least it puts positive vibes out.

Photographs can lie...the best pictures are the ones in your head.

    Thanks June x
